University of Minnesota
Type of Institution: Graduate Research University
URL: http://www.cbs.umn.edu/main/summer_research

Description: The University of Minnesota LSSURP oversees and coordinates four life sciences programs Neuroscience, NSF-REU-Molecular Genetics and Proteomics, NSF-REU Global Change Ecology, and NIH-Training Grant Heart Lung and Blood. The programs begin with a joint orientation weekend, followed by participation in a 10-week research project under the direction of a University of Minnesota faculty mentor, and numerous special activities focused on professional development as well as social interaction. Both the Neuroscience and Molecular Genetics and Proteomics programs involve a three-credit course taken at the University of Minnesota's Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories that hone laboratory techniques in preparation for the lab work conducted during the rest of the summer. The summer research experience concludes with a poster symposium and banquet.

Qualifications: LSSURP is designed to recruit highly qualified students to the graduate life science programs of the University of Minnesota. Underrepresented minority students are encouraged to apply. No previous lab experience is required, though students will find that a solid foundation in science and math will be required in students who are selected for the program. Students' GPAs will be considered only as one element of their entire application. Each application will be considered as a whole with no specific section determining students’ candidacy. LSSURP is particularly concerned with recruiting students with a strong interest in pursuing graduate school and/or professional programs.
