Summer Fellowships in Genome Sciences and Policy

Description: Engage in revolutionary research at Duke University through the 10-week Summer Fellowship Program, Explorations in the Genome Sciences,within the interdisciplinary Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. Gain an appreciation of major questions in genome sciences and policy through mentored research projects, lectures, discussions and a summer genome retreat. Areas of research for summer projects often involve both experimental and computational approaches and can include: evolutionary and comparative genomics, epigenetics of complex disease, structural and functional genomics, population genetics, gene networks, and gene expression analysis. In addition, all participants will be exposed to topics in genome ethics and policy. Student participants will be housed in Duke University residence facilities, most likely the Central Campus Apartments, for the duration of the program. In addition to on-campus housing, students will receive a stipend of $4,250. Limited funds are available for travel reimbursement for each student.

Qualifications: The Summer Fellowships in Genome Sciences and Policy are open to current Freshman and Sophomore students from 4-year colleges and universities having successfully completed (or currently enrolled in) at least one biological sciences course. This program is supported primarily through an REU grant from the National Science Foundation which requires that participants be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. We welcome applications from all students and encourage women and individuals from minority groups to apply. Students will be selected based on their academic record, statement of interest and letter of recommendation from a faculty member of their home academic institution.
