Research Experiences in Open Ocean and Subtropical Marine
Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (formerly BBSR)
Type of Institution: Field Station
URL: http://www.bbsr.edu/Education/reu/reu.html
Description: A hands-on experience that allows students to experience the process of
science by conducting independent research projects focused on marine
habitats in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Students participate in
weekly seminars, cruises aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer, and dives on
local coral reefs. The program focuses on marine sciences with emphasis
on: biogeochemistry, climate change, plankton ecology, marine ecology,
coral reef ecology, molecular biology, environmental quality and
assessment, invertebrate zoology, and microbial ecology/genomics. A
final oral presentation and written report are required. Room and board
is provided at no charge. Students must live on station as it is not
practical to live or eat off station due to distance/travel time/cost.
Students receive an additional $200/week to cover miscellaneous
expenses. Selection starts on 30 May. This is not a firm deadline.
However, all information must be received 1 month before the start date
so students can be cleared through Bermuda Immigration.
Qualifications: We are generally looking for sophomore or above with strong academic
records in the life or environmental sciences.
MUST be US citizen.
