Our REU introduces participants to problems coming from various aspects of algebraic and geometric combinatorics. While we do not decide on research questions until the end of spring, see http://www.math.umn.edu/~reiner/REU/REU.html for projects and topics from previous years. Participants are free to work on any of the problems as they choose.
All else being equal, we prefer students with strong coursework in algebra. Strong undergraduate coursework is good, some graduate coursework is even better. Independent reading projects are good if commented upon in the superviser's letter.
